by Alan Radley, Professor of Social Psychology, Loughborough University, UK

Territories of the Breast’ stands in a tradition of women’s activism about breast cancer and its treatment, making a valuable contribution to art about illness. This moving and informative movie begins with Sonia Baez-Hernandez’s diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. Using voices from patients, families, and medical practitioners, it tells stories of problems women of color face, for whom screening opportunities and treatment options are comparatively limited. It also raises the issue of what women without health insurance in the USA face when they receive a breast cancer diagnosis—using their artistic practice for healing and to promote a dialogue to eradicate health disparities. Sonia shows how she encounters the effects of a disease, one part of this being making a DVD for her documentary and its promise to help other women in similar situations.
